Meeting or Teleconference Held |
Meeting w/ DOWL discussing work plan for soil removal and characterization activities. Kotzebue landfill will tank the soil from borings for thermopile foundation. Field screening may be completed concurrently with installation of thermopiles, however, DEC is not requiring this. The stockpile will need to be sampled and disposed of according to state regulations. Thermopiles will be installed before spring melt. Characterization may need to be postponed until summer. |

Site Characterization Workplan Approved |
Approved work plan for field screening of select thermopiles excavations on North West boundary. All soil will be stockpiled and sampled before disposal. Further characterization needed later. |

Site Characterization Workplan Approved |
Approved workplan for the installation of 6 soil boring between the new nullagvik hotel (formerly hanson's trading post) and Shore Avenue. Analytical and field screening samples will be obtained by split-spoon samples. One or two borings will be located between new hotel and bayside restaurant. The objective of this sampling event will be to determine if soil contamination extends off the property. |

Update or Other Action |
DEC receoved from DOWL HKM the report titled "Environmental Field Work at the New Nullagvik Hotel ". Field work indicates that there is contamination in soil with DRO, GRO and benzene above migration to groundwater cleanup levels but below ingestion/inhalation levels. Groundwater sampling and/or porewater sampling may be required to determine in contamination is reaching the Kotzebue Sound. |

Received report of soil screening and sampling from borings and entrance excavation associated with new Nullagvik Hotel construction on former Hanson Trading Post property. Stockpiled soil samples from thermosiphon borings had DRO contamination up to 725 mg/kg; stockpiled soil from hotel entrance excavation contained DRo up to 904 mg/kg. PAHs sampled from thermosiphon borings cuttings were below migration to gw cleanup levels. Diesel odor was noted in thermosiphon borings at the southeastern installations.
