Seagren and Lockwood located site and noted 12 or more barrels, some full and some leaking, which appear to contain oil. There is an abandoned building at the site, which appears to have been a power plant. An airstrip is located adjacent to the site, which was recently oiled. No surface oiling permit issued by DEC. |

(Old R:Base Action Code = FI - Field Inspection (General)). Kegler and Lockwood flew by rental aircraft to Granite Point drum site and walked to power house area. 16 drums were observed, most of which appeared to contain oil or some material. There was oil soaked soil around the drums and also some oily patches around the power house structure. Much of the soil in the area appeared to have been disturbed in the past several years. Samples obtained from 7 of the drums on 8/24/88. 6 drums contained a black oil, and the seventh a yellowish oil. Only the yellowish oil indicated > 50 ppm PCBs with the CHLOR-N-OIL screening kit. The yellowish oil was to be sent to a lab for confirmation. |

Site Characterization Report Approved |
ADEC sent RP approval letter for “Environmental Site Assessment for Central Alaska Utilities Site-Tyonek”, dated July 2022, received via electronic mail April 5, 2023. Site work performed in 2022 located 17 fuel barrels scattered across the site. Most drums were either crushed, burn barrels or located on a concrete pad. Field screening and analytical samples (tested for GRO, DRO, RRO and BTEX) were collected from soil beneath 5 barrels that remained intact. Two analytical samples slightly exceeded DRO cleanup levels (250 mg/kg) with results of 300 and 434 mg/kg. All other detected petroleum contaminants were below cleanup levels. |
