Problems/Comments

This site encompasses the majority of Groundwater Zone 5 and includes 12 separate drum storage areas. Solid waste, trenches, stained soil, and drums were identified using aerial photographs from 1951 to 1982. Contamination within this area has been fairly well documented in previous investigations concerning soil treatment cells and the RAPCON system as well as a fire training area. Groundwater flow is generally in the direction of Red Fox Creek and the adjacent wetlands. Each of the 12 drum storage areas have been given distinct identifiers (SA036-DR1, SA036-DR2, etc). Additional sampling will be required to determine the nature and extent of contamination at each of the drum storage areas. AF point of contact: Charley Peyton, Project Manager, 611th CES/CEV 10471 20th Street Suite 338, Elmendorf AFB, AK 99506-2270; Telephone 907-552-9765.

11/20/2013 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Submit approval letter to the USAF on the Final 2011 Remedial Action Cleanup Report for King Salmon Airport, AK. The report describes work at two discrete locations at SA036 (DR9 and DR13). At SA036-DR9, thirteen 55-gallon drums were removed from the site along with 38 cubic yards of contaminated soil. The drums contained a solidified tar-like substance. Confirmation sample results were all below ADEC cleanup levels. At SA036-DR13, excavation of TCE and DRO contamination occurred in 2012. Eight 1-cubic yard super sacks with TCE contaminated soil was shipped off site for disposal and 13 cubic yards of POL contaminated soil was placed in the biocells. Confirmation samples from the TCE excavation area indicate that the extent of TCE soil contamination was reached. One confirmation sample collected beneath “oil reservoirs” indicate contamination remains associated with debris. Further action is required. Guy Warren
