Problems/Comments
The FAA Nenana Station is an inactive navigation station owned by multiple parties and operated by the FAA. The station is divided into a Northern and Southern region. The North Nenana site consisted of very high frequency onmidirectional tactical air navigation facility (VORTAC) Building 402; the remote communication air to ground facility (RCAG), the Quarters area, the Former Utility Building 602, and the Barbecue Building; and the Former Water Pumphouse Building 604, Former Fuel Storage and Pipeline, and Former Landfill source areas. The Landfill was entered as a separate site (Hazard ID 25793) to track cleanup and land use control information separately. Vortac - In 1997 a 1000 gal UST was excavated and confirmation samples were below cleanup levels. In 2011 areas were soil staining had previously been identified were sampled and all contaminants were below cleanup levles or non-detect. Former Utility Bldg 602 - Two USTs and a 15,000 gallon AST were removed in 1997, but contaminated soil remained. In 2011, 1025 tons of potentialy contaminated soil was excavated. Confirmation samples were all below cleanup levels. Test pits were excavated and sampled at the location of a former sump, samples did not detect contamination. Former Water Pumphouse Building 604 - A trace of petroleum hydrocarbons well below MCLs was detected in a cistern at the site, but the building was demolished and no releases were reported or observed. Former Fuel Storage and Pipeline – A fuel storage tank and pumphouse were decommissioned in the late 1970's. Three surface soil samples collected in the 1990's did not detect contamination, but their association with the former fuel tank is uncertain as the site was covered in railroad debris. This area was entered as a separate site (Hazard ID 25800) to track investigation and cleanup information separately. The Barbeque Bldg - a bucket containing pesticides was spilled at the site. One cubic yard of soil was excavated in 1997, confirmation samples did not detect contamination above cleanup levels.
Action Information
Action Date | Action | Description | DEC Staff |
---|---|---|---|
8/1/1997 | Leaking Underground Storage Tank Cleanup Initiated - Petroleum | This record was added to track historic progress at the site. The 1998 Montgomery Watson report describes the UST removals at the VORTAC and Utility Building 602. The VORTAC excavation removed contaminated soil to below the cleanup level. Contaminated soil at the Utility Blgd was left in place. Further remedial action in 2011 removed 1025 cubic yards of potentially contaminated soil. Confrimation samples at the limits of the excavation were below the cleanup levels. | Kim DeRuyter |
1/9/2008 | Exposure Tracking Model Ranking | Initial ranking with ETM completed. Initial ranking of the VORTAC, VASI, BBQ Building, and the Utility Building at the Former Quarters Area. Created a complete site summary and saved it to the electronic file. | Kim DeRuyter |
1/9/2008 | Site Added to Database | Site added to the database. | Mitzi Read |
1/10/2008 | Update or Other Action | A draft workplan for this site was received on November 9, 2007. The objectives of the workplan are to investigate, and excavate surface stains at the VORTAC and VASI, excavate contaminated soil associated with USTs at the Former Utility Building located at the Former Quarters area, and replace (and sample), monitoring wells at the former Julius H-marker site. The Julius H-Marker site is tracked as a separate site in the LUST database. | Kim DeRuyter |
3/2/2009 | Update or Other Action | Reviewed and approved the Final Site Characterization Work Plan received 2/26/09. | Kim DeRuyter |
10/19/2009 | Update or Other Action | A Cleanup Complete determination was issued for the chlordane release at the Barbeque Building. Further remedial action is anticipated at other sites at this facility. | Kim DeRuyter |
1/4/2012 | Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other | The 2011 Draft Site Cleanup and Investigation Report describes excavations, site inspections and sample results for all of the remaining areas of concern at the North Nenana site. Samples collected from the areas where surface soil stains were previously noted near building 402 (VORTAC) did not detect contamination above migration to groundwater cleanup levels. Four samples were collected around an active transformer and sampled for PCBs. PCBs were not detected in these samples. At Building 602 (RCAG) where two USTs and an AST and fuel pipeline were decommissioned in 1997, 1,025 tons of contaminated soil was removed from the beneath the tanks and pipeline. All confirmation samples were below migration to groundwater cleanup levels. | Kim DeRuyter |
1/5/2012 | Exposure Tracking Model Ranking | A new updated ranking with ETM has been completed for source area 78306 VORTAC. All exposure pathways are incomplete, building 402 was also reranked to reflect the recent sampling results documented in the 2011 Draft Site Cleanup and Investigation, and all exposure pathways were incomplete. The Chlordane release was cleaned up and closed during a previous cleanup effort, and the landfill has been pulled out as a separate site. This leaves no areas of concern under Hazard ID 4549. A closure letter will be drafted when the Final SCI report is approved. | Kim DeRuyter |
2/10/2012 | Leaking Underground Storage Tank Release Confirmed - Petroleum | LUST site created in CSP database for source area Utility Bldg (602), 78307 This entry is for administrative purposes only. The USTs were removed from the site in 1997 and the residual contaminated soil was excavated in 2011. | Kim DeRuyter |
2/10/2012 | Update or Other Action | LUST site created in CSP database for source area VORTAC Bldg 402, 78306. This entry is for administrative purposes only. The USTs were removed from the site in 1997 and confirmation samples at the limits of the excavation were below the cleanup level. | Kim DeRuyter |
2/28/2012 | Final Cleanup Report Reviewed | Approval of Final Site Cleanup and Investigation Report, North and South Nenana, Federal Aviation Administration, Nenana, Alaska. The report addresses work done in the summer of 2011 to address potential and confirmed contamination at the VORTAC and Former Utility Building (602). All contaminated soil has been removed from the site and treated, and all confirmation samples indicate the analytes are all below the most stringent cleanup levels. | David Robinson |
5/10/2012 | Exposure Tracking Model Ranking | This is an administrative update to reflect that there is no eco risk at the Barbeque Building Chlordane release site. The chlordane contamination was excavated, confirmation sample results from the limits of the excavation were below method detection limits for chlordane. Diesel range organics were detected below the most stringent method 2 cleanup levels, and a closure letter was issued on October 22, 2009. The eco risk was erroneously set at low potential during a previous site ranking. | Kim DeRuyter |
6/8/2012 | Exposure Tracking Model Ranking | A new updated ranking with ETM has been completed for source area 78307 Utility Bldg (602). All pathways were either incomplete or deminimis exposure. | Kim DeRuyter |
6/8/2012 | Cleanup Complete Determination Issued | Site closure letter sent May 31, 2012 | David Robinson |
