Problems/Comments
On November 22, 2007, approximately 284.5 gallons (calculated from fueling records) of diesel were released from an aboveground home heating oil tank onto the ground and beneath a residence, when snow fell from the roof onto the fuel line. On November 26, 2007 two ADEC staff from Fairbanks responded to the incident. The Nulato Tribal Council hired two village crewmen to clean up the contamination. A total of 18 bags of oiled dirt and duff were removed from under the dwelling and burned at the landfill. 13 bags of oiled snow from under the tank were placed in drums and stored at the landfill for melting purposes. Fuel will be skimmed from the drums with absorbants and burned at the landfill. An evident stain and strong odor of fuel still remain under the building suggesting that a large portion of the fuel absorbed into the soil and remains there. The building's foundation is on pilings. Update 4-2011: there is currently one community water well in Nulato, 1.25 miles west of the lower townsite, approximately 2.2 miles from this site. There are no private water wells in Nulato.
