Problems/Comments
In October 2001 and June 2002 site investigations were conducted to evaluate environmental issues involved in relocating the Stony River Airport to a location south of the current runway, at a higher elevation. DRO, RRO, and arsenic were found in soil above ADEC cleanup levels. Paint with high levels of lead, and asbestos-containing materials were also found in several abandoned structures. A majority of the area evaluated was the former village site, at the northern edge of the proposed runway, and contained 115 55-gallon drums, a 15,000-gallon aboveground storage tank, several small structures including a generator shed, and other debris.

2/21/2013 | Update or Other Action | Communication with ADOT&PF on the proposed Stony River Airport relocation project. ADOT&PF has purchased the property for the proposed airport, however the project is low priority and may not be completed. Due to the limited population of Stony River, the forested nature of the contaminated area, and the lack of complete exposure pathways, additional investigation and cleanup is being deferred until ADOT&PF determine their way forward with respect to the airport relocation. | Bill O'Connell |
11/7/2014 | Update or Other Action | Email sent on today's date to ADOT Project Manager for the Stony River Airport inquiring as to status of project. | Keather McLoone |
5/26/2016 | Update or Other Action | According to the ADOT Project Manager, work on the site has been indefinitely suspended. ADOT&PF was working on the airport relocation project but ran into issues with property acquisition. Several parcels were acquired, but ADOT&PF reached an impasse on other parcels critical to the project. As a result, the airport relocation project was closed in 2013 and ADOT&PF is no longer planning airport improvements in the contaminated area. | Lisa Griswold |
