Problems/Comments
In 2001, a site reconnaissance effort identified diesel range organics (DRO) and gasoline range organics (GRO) above ADEC cleanup levels in soil at the site of the Kiana High School's former tank farm. Five of six aboveground storage tanks had been moved to the new community tank farm.
Action Information

---|---|---|---|
1/31/2002 | Update or Other Action | The Northwest Arctic Borough School District (NABSD) owns and operates this tank farm. According to the report, as of 2001, only one of the six original tanks remains at the site. The remaining tank is still attached to the piping distribution system; however the piping is apparently not in service. The other tanks were reportedly moved to the new community tank farm. A gravel pad shows the general footprint of the former tank farm. Limited soil staining was observed around piping valves near the one remaining tank. Field screening was conducted downhill of the former tank farm, along a trail intersecting a fuel distribution pipeline and adjacent to the northeast corner of the high school. PID readings did indicate the presence of petroleum contamination on the trail and adjacent to the school. One soil sample collected from under the valve on the remaining tank contained 4,200 mg/kg DRO and 448 mg/kg GRO. Another sample collected adjacent to a piling on the northeast corner of the high school contained 5,430 mg/kg DRO and 97.3 mg/kg GRO. The consultant stated that the results indicate that contamination is present in areas away from the tank farm which may suggest possible releases from the distribution piping system, overfills, and/or surface migration of product. | Deborah Williams |
