Problems/Comments
In 2001, a site reconnaissance effort identified diesel range organics (DRO) and gasoline range organics (GRO) above ADEC cleanup levels in soil at the site of the Kiana Alaska Village Electric Cooperative (AVEC) former tank farm. All fifteen original aboveground storage tanks were taken out of service in 2000. All but one tank were removed from the site in July 2001. This tank farm has been replaced by three new tanks and is located immediately northwest of the new tank farm (see Hazard ID 26145).
Action Information
Action Date | Action | Description | DEC Staff |
---|---|---|---|
1/31/2002 | Update or Other Action | Shannon & Wilson report describing AST Site Reconnaissance in the Village of Kiana. Fifteen ASTs with a reported total capacity of 120,300 gallons were owned and operated by AVEC for power generation in the village, however, only one remained at the time of this assessment. The tanks were filled by a pipeline from the Kobuk River. This tank farm is no longer in service, and has been replaced by three new 12,000-gallon tanks installed at the southeast end of the former tank farm. Surface soil sampling indicated GRO and DRO exceeded ADEC cleanup levels in the two samples that were collected. Sediment in the drainage culvert outlet from the tank farm also contained DRO above cleanup levels. Report recommended additional assessment due to the proximity to residential areas and surface water drainage. | Willett Boger |
