Problems/Comments
Preliminary investigation conducted in 2001 indicated potential hydrocarbon contamination in portions of the gravel pad.

4/8/2008 | Site Added to Database | Site added to the database. | Mitzi Read |
4/9/2008 | Site Characterization Workplan Approved | Received Phase II work plan for Put River State 1. 18 boreholes are proposed for the gravel pad area. Based on field screening results, selected samples will be analyzed for DRO/RRO, with 25% also analyzed for GRO/BTEX. Additional boreholes and sampling are planned for the surrounding tundra and the lake adjacent to the site. Additional characterization will be performed in summer 2008 in accordance with a supplemental work plan on an as-needed basis. | Bill O'Connell |
10/24/2008 | Exposure Tracking Model Ranking | Initial ranking with ETM completed for source area id: 78576 name: Historical DRO contamination | Bill O'Connell |
11/4/2008 | Site Characterization Report Approved | Received Put River State #1 Phase II Site Assessment Report and Corrective Action Plan. The phase II investigation at the gravel pad consisted of advancing and sampling 21 boreholes, with an additional nine boreholes in the lake bed south of the site and in tundra areas. Hydrocarbon contamination was found at several areas on the gravel pad, with a maximum DRO concentration of 4,510 mg/kg at 2.8 to 3.2 feet bgs at GP4. Tundra samples did not indicate the tundra had been impacted, however shallow lake samples found DRO up 2,660 mg/kg and a sheen was produced at several areas along the submerged pad. Please see the next entry for information on the Corrective Action Plan. | Bill O'Connell |
11/4/2008 | Cleanup Plan Approved | Corrective Action Plan received, see entry above for Phase II information. Based on the Phase II data, gravel at the gravel pad will be segregated into clean, conditional use and contaminated gravel. Conditional use gravel will be used as sub-grade fill in the reserve pit topped with clean gravel. Contaminated gravel, including material excavated from the lake bed, will be transported to East Dock for landfarming, or to DS4 grind and inject facility for exempt material around the wellhead. Approximately 300 pilings located at the pad will be cut-off below grade. Composite confirmation samples will be collected form excavated areas where impacted soil was found during the Phase II investigation, with discreet samples collected from areas with DRO > 2,000 mg/kg in Phase II sampling. | Bill O'Connell |
10/15/2009 | Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other | Reviewed Corrective Action Report for Put River State 1. The entire gravel pad was removed and reserve pit waste excavated and teh area was capped with gravel and tundra overburden in preparation for site rehab. Approximately 13,700 cy of clean gravel was transported from the site to W Pad or Z Pad for beneficial reuse and approximately 9,800 cy of contaminated gravel and lakebed sediment was hauled to East Dock Landfarm for treatment. Approximately 1,200 cy of conditional use gravel was used as backfill in the reserve pit. Composite confirmation soil samples were collected from the former pad footprint, and discrete samples were collected at areas with DRO greater than 2,000 mg/kg. Confirmation samples contained DRO up to 308 mg/kg and RRO up to 1,070 mg/kg. PAHs were not detected above cleanup levels. | Bill O'Connell |
11/9/2009 | Exposure Tracking Model Ranking | A new updated ranking with ETM has been completed for source area 78576 Historical DRO contamination. | Bill O'Connell |
11/24/2009 | Cleanup Complete Determination Issued | The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, Contaminated Sites Program (ADEC) has completed a review of the environmental records associated with BPX Put River State 1 located near Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. Based on the information provided to date, it has been determined that the contaminant concentrations remaining on site do not pose an unacceptable risk to human health or the environment and this site will be closed. | Bill O'Connell |
