Problems/Comments
The site is situated nearly 1.5 miles east of the Nome Kougarok Highway, approximately 35 miles northeast of Nome, and consists of about 1/2 acre of land that has been used as a parking/staging area for vehicles and mining equipment. Numerous small surface stains were obsrved along with one larger release caused by spills during fuel transfers, or leaks from a fuel staging area. BLM performed site cleanup activities in 2006, removing abandoned vehicles, drums, and debris, and excavating stained soil. Small volumes of diesel contamination remained at 2 feet below ground surface (bgs) beneath a former pickup, and 12 feet bgs beneath the former fuel staging area. The remaining DRO contamination is below 1,000 mg/kg, and has been capped with clean gravel.
