Problems/Comments

Surface soil and drinking water sampling were conducted on June 13, 2008 in response to the discovery of drums on a residential property. Drinking water results were all below ADEC cleanup levels. Surface soil contained the following contaminants above ADEC cleanup levels: aroclor 1254 at 2.21 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg), pentachlorophenol at 0.67 mg/kg, arsenic at 8.67 mg/kg, and methylene chloride at 93 mg/kg. The drums were located ~100 feet Southwest of the residence and ~50 feet Southwest of the residential drinking water well.

He was not able to provide sample locations that were field screened (with a PID), but characterized the yard as having no additional soils that looked chemically contaminated. He also thinks that there was not a PPR file for this as it occurred during a time when these sites went right over to CS without a file associated with it. Laura Jacobs

2/25/2019 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other ADEC staff reviewed the "Draft Site Characterization Report, Residence - 3359 Lineman Avenue Drums, North Pole, Alaska 99705". Although all soil sample results measured Arsenic above Migration to Groundwater cleanup levels, ADEC determined that can be attributed to background levels. The trichloroethylene measured above cleanup levels in one soil sample was not measured in the groundwater and so ADEC does not feel that there is an exposure pathway to drinking water. The pentachlorophenol and PCBs documented in the one soil sample in 2008 were not detected in the soil or groundwater samples from this study. Therefore, ADEC has decided to proceed with site closure. Laura Jacobs
2/27/2019 Exposure Tracking Model Ranking A new updated ranking with ETM has been completed for source area 75748 Drums. Laura Jacobs

3/22/2019 Cleanup Complete Determination Issued ADEC issued a Cleanup Complete Determination for the site Residence - 3359 Lineman Avenue based upon the findings of the site characterization work completed in 2018. Contaminants (PCBs, PCP, methylene chloride) found in a composited soil sample near the drum were above cleanup levels in 2008, but were not found in a more complete site characterization conducted in 2018. ADEC therefore determined the contaminants were to be characterized as "De Minimis". Laura Jacobs
