4/21/2005 Update or Other Action Contaminated Sites staff reviewed a Summary Report for work done during 2004 at Sites 10/11 on the Coast Guard base in Kodiak. Two large JP-5 spills in 1987 and 1992 caused free product on groundwater. The site is a large asphalt covered tarmac for helicopter and plane activity at the base and is adjacent to Woman’s Bay. A free product recovery system was installed in the months after the initial spill became known. 118,000-gallons of free product have been recovered, most in the first couple years after each spill. Currently the recovery systems are passive and the detection of free product in wells is intermittent. Continued groundwater monitoring is planned. It appears that the risk assessment may need to be re-evaluated for recreational fisher people and ecological pathways. Impacts to the bay currently appear to be below surface water criteria although exceedences have been measured during storm events Jeff Brownlee
