Update or Other Action |
CS staff performed end of season site inspections for FUDS on Kodiak Island. Several former UST sites will need groundwater monitoring wells reinstalled after the original wells were removed by excavation activity. Approximately 130 drums discovered at the Buskin Lake Site 12 area have been removed by helicopter and analytical samples taken from the footprints. |

3/4/2004 |
Update or Other Action |
Staff reviewed a groundwater monitoring report for a FUDS in Kodiak. A network of ten monitoring wells has been monitored at the Buskin Lake Drum Disposal Area (Site 12) for four quarters. Low levels of Total Aqueous Hydrocarbons were detected in two sentry wells. The levels were about 1 part per billion which is well below surface water quality levels. The former drum storage area had about 5,000 cubic yards of impacted soil removed in 1999 and isolated pockets of impacted soils remain below the water table. |

Update or Other Action |
Staff reviewed a remedial investigation report for a drum cache found near the Buskin Lake Site 12 Drum Disposal Area FUDS on Kodiak. The 167 drums (all empty) and approximately one ton of impacted soil were removed by helicopter. The site is across an anadromous fish stream so wasn’t accessible to vehicles. Confirmation samples showed that further soil removal is needed in three areas. Groundwater characterization may be necessary depending on depth to groundwater and depth of contamination |

staff participated in a Kodiak Island Borough Assembly meeting to discuss the status of Formerly Used Defense Sites on the island. The Corps of Engineers also participated at the meeting. The DEC and COE contractor also participated in a public open house to solicit comments on the cleanup work being done on Kodiak. Turnout was light as is typical in Kodiak |

Contaminated Sites staff participated in a public open house for Formerly Used Defense Sites on Kodiak Island. Staff also conducted several site inspections. Proposed Plans for the Little Navy Annex Site and the Cape Chiniak Site were introduced at the Kodiak Island Borough assembly meeting. The open house had a moderate amount of interest with several community members stopping by to discuss sites and pick up information. |

Contaminated Sites staff participated in a Kodiak Island Borough Assembly meeting to discuss the recent documents available for the review and the field work the COE will be doing this summer in the island. The COE and DEC were interviewed on public radio to discuss the Kodiak projects and overall contaminated site cleanup process. There was also a public open house to give community members the opportunity to bring up concerns and ask questions in person. As typical for Kodiak turn out was light |

Update or Other Action |
Contaminated Sites staff reviewed a draft Proposed Plan for the Buskin Lake Drum Disposal Area FUDS on Kodiak Island. The site once stored over 3,000 55-gallon drums. The contaminant of concern was DRO in soil. A removal action in 1999 removed about 5,000-cubic yards of impacted soil which was thermally remediated. A few pockets of residual contamination over cleanup levels were left in place below groundwater. Monitoring well sampling showed petroleum constituents in groundwater at well below Table C cleanup levels. The preferred alternative presented in the Proposed Plan is No Further Remedial Action Planned |

Update or Other Action |
Contaminated Sites staff reviewed a draft Decision Document for the Buskin Lake Drum Disposal Formerly Used Defense Site in Kodiak. The site stored about 3,000 drums near the incoming tributary to Buskin Lake. The drums were removed in 1994 and approximately 5,500 cubic yards of DRO impacted soil was removed in 2001. There were several small discrete areas of contamination left in-place below the water table. Groundwater characterization showed no impacts above Table C. The site is planned for Conditional Closure with institutional controls concerning soil disturbance |

Update or Other Action |
Contaminated Sites staff reviewed a Land Use Assurance Plan for Environmental Activities for the U.S. Coast Guard Base in Kodiak. The document outlines a plan to track institutional controls (ICs) at the various contaminated sites on base. There are currently about fifteen sites on base with institutional controls. The plan objective is for the Coast Guard Environmental Section to screen contractor and other activity such as above or below ground construction, well drilling, etc. against the sites listed in the plan. Work can then be tailored to meet any existing ICs |

Update or Other Action |
Staff participated in site inspections at several Formerly Used Defense Sites and Coast Guard sites at Kodiak. The EPA and Coast Guard also participated in the inspections. Remedial actions were being conducted at Drury Gulch, Airport Staging Area Fire Training Pit and Building A-711. The team spent a fair amount of time going over historic data with the contractor for the PCB cleanup at Drury Gulch. We also observed a test run of direct push sampling using a Geoprobe rig at the gulch for sampling data gap areas that were erroneously backfilled due to an extraction method error at the lab |
