Problems/Comments
In 1983, diesel fuel spilled from the washeteria day tank due to overfilling. Reportedly, in 1984/1985 some contaminated soil was excavated and burned in twenty 55 gallon drums. In 1984 and 1991, water samples collected from the old DWW, which is located adjacent to site, contained petroleum constituents below ADEC cleanup levels. This old DWW has since been filled in with dirt and sediment and is no longer in use. In 1992, two new DWWs were installed 250 up gradient. No soil characterization activities have occurred at this site as of February 2011. Also see file 580.07.001 and 580.28.001.

---|---|---|---|
10/29/1984 | Update or Other Action | (Old R:Base Action Code = FI - Field Inspection (General)). Sampling of 48 foot bgs washeteria well performed on several occasions beginning 10/84. Results showed up to 1.5 ppb xylenes on 11/8/84. Other aromatic compounds detected in 12/84 sample - up to 10.2 ppb napthalenes. S. Mawson suggested carbon filtration (2/26/85). | Simon Mawson |

1/8/2008 | Update or Other Action | ADEC Drinking Water Program provided an update on the White Mountain water supply. The well that was contaminated back in 1984 is no longer in service. The Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium drilled two new wells approximately 250’ up-gradient of the Washeteria in Nov 1992. | Jim Frechione |
4/24/2008 | Update or Other Action | Spoke with the City Clerk, Amy Titus, and then the Utilities Manager, Nora Douglas (907-638-2230), to discover that the contaminated soils were excavated, burned in barrels until they dug soil that would not burn, back in 1984/1985. Nora remembers at least twenty 55 gallon drums that were burned off. She checked the old city records but did not find out what happened to the soil after it was burned. Most of the elders on the council at that time have passed away, but she knows that the old well was capped off and filled in with gravel and dirt. Nora is the niece of the man that was Mayor of White Mountain when the old well was shut down, and a teenager at the time. She said that now the old well is level with or below the ground surface and grown over with natural vegetation. There is no petroleum odor or staining at the site of the old well. | Pam Clemens |
