Problems/Comments
Well water samples in 1983-84 found benzene contamination above MCL. Dates of release, source, and extent of contamination unknown. ADEC concluded low level health risk. Subsequent drinking water (DW) samples in 1985, 1995, showed decline in benzene levels. DW samples from 1997 were nondetect for benzene. Contamination at this site has naturally attenuated over time, and is no longer present in the drinking water well at the Sourdough Roadhouse. Even though the source of this contamination was never identified, there is no longer an unacceptable risk to human health or the environment and the site will be closed. Water samples in 1983-84 have shown up to 11.2 ppb benzene. 65 foot well on site - 6" casing. Water depth approximately 10 feet. Mr. and Mrs. Ruechel owners as of May 30, 1989. Site also has a history of problems (NOVs issued) with coliform bacteria in water. Permit# 370730 (rpltr5). Cross reference file 140.07.027
Action Information
Action Date | Action | Description | DEC Staff |
---|---|---|---|
8/9/1983 | Update or Other Action | (Old R:Base Action Code = FI - Field Inspection (General)). D. Parker sampled on-site well. Results: 8.1 ppb benzene. | Former Staff |
1/24/1984 | Update or Other Action | (Old R:Base Action Code = FI - Field Inspection (General)). J. Bauer sampled on-site well. Results: 7.7 ppb benzene, with other purgeable aromatics present in lesser quantities. Letter to owner advised use of carbon filters. Determined low level health risk because water used by tourists frequenting roadhouse. | John Bauer |
11/14/1984 | Update or Other Action | (Old R:Base Action Code = FI - Field Inspection (General)). D. Parker sampled on-site well. Results: 11.2 ppb benzene. | Former Staff |
5/29/1985 | Update or Other Action | (Old R:Base Action Code = FI - Field Inspection (General)). D. Parker sampled on-site well. Results: 8.8 ppb benzene. | Former Staff |
8/7/1989 | Update or Other Action | (Old R:Base Action Code = FI - Field Inspection (General)). New charcoal filter required every two weeks per ADEC Food Establishment Inspection. | Former Staff |
4/18/1990 | Site Ranked Using the AHRM | Initial ranking. | Former Staff |
6/15/1990 | Site Number Identifier Changed | Old Reckey 1988310129107. Changed to reflect correct region. | Former Staff |
1/14/1994 | Update or Other Action | (Old R:Base Action Code = RPL2 - Site Information Request Letter). Sent PRP-CS Database Noitification Letter to RP requesting update and more environmental information concerning the contaminated site. As of this "complete date" no response has been received. | Jeff Peterson |
1/25/1994 | Site Added to Database | Benzene contamination. | Former Staff |
5/5/2006 | Update or Other Action | Contacted Gakona Chamber of Commerce and verified via DNR recorders office that current owners (since 1999) are Todd and Patty Denton. | Shannon Oelkers |
5/9/2006 | Update or Other Action | Contacted current land owner Patty Denton by phone. Denton does not know original source of contamination. She had water tested in 1994, 1995 and 1997 because ADEC Drinking Water program recommended it. In 1998 Sourdough Lodge switched to hauled drinking water, although well water is still used for lawns, showers, etc. | Shannon Oelkers |
5/9/2006 | Update or Other Action | Records from ADEC show levels of benzene in 1983 at 8.1 ug/L, above ADEC cleanup levels. Samples from 1984, 1985, and 1995 show levels of benzene steadily decreasing in the drinking water to non-detect in 1997. | Shannon Oelkers |
5/11/2006 | Site Closure Approved | Based on the information provided to date, ADEC has determined that contamination at this site has naturally attenuated over time, and is no longer present in the drinking water well at the Sourdough Roadhouse. Even though the source of this contamination was never identified, there is no longer an unacceptable risk to human health or the environment and the site will be closed. | Shannon Oelkers |
