Problems/Comments

ADOT&PF dumped asphalt and diesel into the Goo Pit during the paving of the Haines Highway in the 1970s. Other substances are rumored to have been dumped in the Goo Pit, but have not been confirmed to exist. Army has performed some site assessment activities including geophysical work, but is unwilling to clean it up due to the contributions of ADOT&PF.

6/28/2012 Cleanup Complete Determination Issued The area of the suspected goo pit was paved by ADOT&PF as part of the Lutak Road realignment project. The area has been made into a pullout with picnic tables and bathroom facilities. Contaminated soil or asphalt associated with the operation of an ADOT&PF asphalt batch plant could not be located during the site characterization. Some buried metal objects were removed in 1999. It is suspected that groundwater contamination in the vicinity of the goo pit is a result of contamination migrating from the upgradient bulk fuel terminal which is being addressed by the US Army.
