Problems/Comments

Approximately 29,000 gallons of #1 heating oil spilled near Yukon River beach area on 12/12/89. Extent of contamination and health impact unknown. Containment dike constructed, contaminated snow removed, and approximately 5,600 gallons of oil recovered as of 4/90. The location was reported to be approximately 150 feet from the school gym toward the Yukon River. City of Nulato broke fuel line, however fuel storage tanks belong to Yukon-Koyukuk school district. (rpltr6) Former File Number 840.02.002. Update 4-2011: there is currently one community water well in Nulato, 1.25 miles west of the lower townsite. There are no private water wells in Nulato. There are plans to re-activate the Blackberry well and tie it into the upper townsite's water system in the fall of 2011, but this is not impacted by any spills in the lower townsite.

1/8/2016 Update or Other Action Letter sent on this day with comprehensive site history and request for a work plan by June 31, 2016 to address three main data gaps; mainly the extent of contamination, the whereabouts of soil stored at the fuel depot, and potential impacts to surface water. SITE HISTORY: On December 12, 1989, a heating oil pipeline was struck by City of Nulato snow removal equipment. According to the file, the snow removal equipment slid off the road and got stuck in a ditch. In the process of recovering the snow removal equipment, the pipeline was run-over and broken. The pipeline was ruptured approximately 150 feet from the school gym, near the Yukon River bank. It was estimated that 28,684 gallons of heating oil released to the riverbank, and on the beach area. The fuel pooled in low areas and soaked into the snow, sand and gravel. On December 13, the City of Nulato created a barrier (made of snow) between the spill site and the Yukon River and began recovering pooled fuel and impacted snow. By December 15, an estimated 5,175 gallons of fuel had been recovered. The remaining 23,509 gallons of fuel either absorbed into the snow or soil. To the extent possible, the impacted snow and soil (reportedly mostly snow) was removed and placed in a lined containment area at the Nulato Fuel Depot. Joshua Barsis
