Problems/Comments

Waste Accumulation Area Number 2 was used to store drummed materials, primarily petroleum, from the 1950s until about 1970. Sampling found high levels of TPH and DRO near the site and 500 feet downslope from area. Additional investigation planned for 1994. (SS01) Located NW of the former power plant. (rpltr8). The site is assigned a MEDIUM overall risk on the Air Force Relative Risk Evaluation Worksheet dated 8/23/95. The worksheet indicates that the soil is contaminated with POL products. Potential receptors are identified as site workers and visitors, moose, bear, small mammals, and birds.

1/23/2004 Meeting or Teleconference Held Staff reviewed and commented on an Air Force letter outlining the risk approach and method for determining need for remedial action at the Murphy Dome LRRS. The Air Force has contracted with CH2MHill to develop a 4-phase analysis of a large diesel spill that occurred in the 1970s and 1980s. Staff will meet with Air Force and their contractor next week to discuss the project. DEC plans to hire a contractor to review the calculations. (Buck, Crapps) Patrice Buck
7/29/2005 GIS Position Updated Updated the location of the site in the database. Colin Craven

4/11/2011 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Contaminated sites staff reviewed and sent comments on a draft Proposed Plan that presents final proposed remedial alternatives for five Installation Restoration Program sites at the Murphy Dome Long Range Radar Station. Tamar Stephens
6/19/2015 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Received work plan for data gap investigation concurrent with site SS07. The objectives of the work plan include 1) Evaluation of the effectiveness Ultraviolet Optical Screening Tool (UVOST) for characterization of soil contamination at the Murphy Dome sites, and 2)Delineation of the areal extent of petroleum hydrocarbon contamination above 250mg/kg associated with the boundaries of the SS01 and SS07 sites. DSMOA Joint Execution Plan (JEP) listed a Feasibility Study for this site, but this was changed to a data gap investigation as additional site characterization was warranted. Joy Whitsel
3/23/2016 Site Characterization Report Approved DEC approved the report entitled "Final Report for Data Gap Investigation at SS01 and SS07, Murphy Dome, Alaska". The purpose of the data gap investigation was to identify and evaluate data gaps remaining at the Murphy Dome SS01 and SS07 sites. The report described activities, results, and conclusions of the investigation, including the following: development of maps to show known contaminated areas and identify data gaps; UVOST screening to delineate the horizontal and vertical extent of petroleum hydrocarbon contamination in the investigation areas; collection of soil samples for correlation with the UVOST screening results, and for evaluation of contaminant concentration; and collection of surface water samples from the seeps to evaluate the potential for continued downgradient contaminant transport. The latter activity could not be completed because no seeps were found at the time of investigation. Joy Whitsel
6/13/2018 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) reviewed the “Draft Supplemental Remedial Investigation Work Plan, Murphy Dome Long Range Radar Station, Murphy Dome, Alaska, WAA #1 (SS007), WAA #2 (SS001)” dated April 2018. This work plan describes soil and groundwater sampling intended to address data gaps in site characterization at Murphy Dome Long Range Radar Station. Comments on the work plan provided to the U.S. Air Force via email. Melinda Brunner
1/3/2020 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other DEC reviewed Draft Report for Supplemental RI at SS001 and SS007. This report described the installation and subsequent decommissioning of 6 groundwater monitoring wells that were all dry, along with several soil boring sampling events and 'ephemeral water body (EWB)' sampling events. There were many exceedances for DRO and RRO in the soils, and one exceedance of RRO in an EWB. Historical surface water samples were above clean up levels for EDB and alpha-BHC. DEC has emailed comments to the USAF. Tim Sharp
2/5/2020 Exposure Tracking Model Ranking A new updated ranking with ETM has been completed for source area 71767 Waste accumulation. Tim Sharp
6/3/2020 Site Characterization Report Approved DEC approved the Final Supplemental Remedial Investigation Work Plan, Revision 1 for Murphy Dome LRRS. The work plan is intended to characterize the site, address data gaps, and fully delineate fuel contamination in soils and surface water at sites SS001 and SS007, as well as fully delineating lead contamination in soil at site SS002. This will be accomplished by site wide UVOST sampling, soil borings near lead impacted soil, and surface water grab samples if encountered. Tim Sharp
10/7/2021 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other DEC sent comments on the Draft Supp RI Report. The report detailed further delineation of fuel, chlorinated solvent, and pesticide contamination at the site. Comments focused on regulation of EWBs as surface water sources and the administrative closure of SS001 by USAF. Tim Sharp

7/22/2024 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other DEC approved the Murphy Dome Long-Range Radar Station Sites SS001 and SS007 Decision Document Final, dated July 2024. The Decision Document (DD) describes the selected remedy for addressing the remaining petroleum contamination at the Bulk Fuel Storage Area (SS007) and the Former Waste Accumulation Area (SS001) sites at the Murphy Dome Long Range Radar site located in Fairbanks, Alaska. The selected remedy proposes the implementation of land use controls to address subsurface contamination along with the excavation and removal of contaminated surface soil. The remaining volume of contamination that exceeds DEC’s maximum allowable concentrations in subsurface soil warrants further remedial activity before the sites can be closed with institutional controls. Ginna Quesada
