Problems/Comments

Shop wastes potentially discharged to floor drain, diesel day tank, and possible backdoor dumping may have caused contamination. Formerly AOC05. Also see file 610.15.002 and archived file 610.23.001. EPA ID #AK5570028659. Potential Institutional Control Established site due to contamination potentially extending under a building. The site was sampled during investigations in 1994, 1999, and 2008, cumulatively identifying approximately 3 cubic yards of soil with DRO concentration in excess of 10,250 mg/kg. Highest sample concentrations were 17,000 mg/kg DRO and 14,800 mg/kg RRO. The building was emptied of all debris and inspected for the presence of a floor drain during the 2009 remedial action. No floor drain was found. The contaminated soil was treated by landspreading onsite. When sample results indicated that the contaminant concentrations were below the health based cleanup levels the excavated soil was used as cover in the construction and debris landfill. This site is closed under CERCLA and state regulations. No further remedial action is required and no institutional controls are necessary.

Action Information

Action Date Action Description DEC Staff
6/15/1999 Update or Other Action 1999 RI Activities - Samples: 2 test pits excavated to maximum depth of 4 feet.; 3 subsurface soil samples collected from test pits. 57 surface soil samples collected for CSL analyses. Analyses: Fixed lab: GRO, DRO, RRO, VOCs, SVOCs, pesticides, PCBs, metals; CSL: DRO and RRO. Significant RI Findings - Soils in the vicinity of the day tank exceeded ADEC cleanup standards for DRO (up to 14,500 mg/kg) and RRO (up to 14,800 mg/kg). Contaminants were found to depths of 2 feet and potentially extend under building. Former Staff

12/30/2008 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Seven test pits were dug beyond the limits of the area previously investigated to determine if petroleum contamination from the former day tank was the source of contamination in the shallow perched water table at AOC02 downgradient of this site. DRO was detected up to 1,080 mg/kg, but groundwater was not encountered, and the lack of significant soil contamination between the day tank and the down gradient site makes this scenario unlikely. Soil Contamination remains near the and diesel AST DRO (up to 14,500 mg/kg) and RRO (up to 14,800 mg/kg) according to the 1999 RI. Kim DeRuyter
3/2/2010 Exposure Tracking Model Ranking A new updated ranking has been completed for source area 71801 SS004. The ETM was updated based on the results of the 2009 Remedial Action Report. The building was demolished and contaminated soil was excavated and treated onsite, then used as daily cover in the permitted construction and debris monoflll. Confirmation samples taken from the limits of the excavations did not detect contamination above the applicable cleanup level. All exposure pathways ranked as incomplete or de-minimis exposure. Kim DeRuyter
1/19/2011 Update or Other Action The CERCLA ROD and Petroleum DD were submitted to the department. Staff provided comments on several versions of the documents. Initially, petroleum contamination at sites with CERCLA contaminants were covered in the ROD. The structure of the CERCLA ROD did not allow for adequate coverage of the petroleum at these sites. Since the petroleum and CERCLA contaminants were not co-located it was decided that the petroleum cleanups at the CERCLA contaminated sites could be covered in the Petroleum Decision Document. Staff provided comments on the draft and draft final versions of these restructured documents. The ROD and Decision Document are currently being prepared for signature. Kim DeRuyter
2/10/2011 CERCLA ROD Approved The selected remedy for this site is No Further Action. Kim DeRuyter
2/10/2011 Cleanup Complete Determination Issued Kim DeRuyter
