Problems/Comments
Two 3,100-barrel diesel ASTs; AST and piping/valve leakage. Formerly AOC06. Also see file 610.15.002 and archived file 610.23.001. EPA ID #AK5570028659. The 1994 PA/SI documented stained surface soils with a petroleum odor adjacent to the two ASTs located at Upper Camp. The 1999 RI concluded that the contamination continued to bedrock at approximately 4 feet below ground surface. 40 cubic yards of contaminated soil was excavated from two excavations at the site during the 2009 remedial action. Confirmation samples did not detect contamination above the applicable cleanup levels. This site is closed under CERCLA and state regulations. No further remedial action is required and no institutional controls are necessary.
Action Information
Action Date | Action | Description | DEC Staff |
---|---|---|---|
6/15/1999 | Update or Other Action | 1999 RI Activities - Samples: 3 test pits excavated to maximum depth of 4.5 feet.; 3 subsurface soil samples collected from test pits. 38 surface soil samples collected for CSL analysis. Analyses: Fixed lab: GRO, DRO, RRO, lead; CSL: DRO and RRO. Significant RI Findings - Soils in the vicinity of the day tank exceeded ADEC cleanup standards for DRO (up to 14,500 mg/kg) and RRO (up to 14,800 mg/kg). Contaminants were found to depths of 2 feet and potentially extend under building. Concentrations of DRO exceeded ADEC cleanup standards at the north end of the tanks near the fuel transfer valves. | Former Staff |

2/23/2007 | Exposure Tracking Model Ranking | Initial | Lisa Maserjian |
12/30/2008 | Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other | Samples collected during the 2008 SRI further delineated the horizontal extent of two areas where soil contamination exceeded the ingestion and inhalation cleanup levels. DRO is the only COC at this site. See site map on page 2-41 of the SRI. | Kim DeRuyter |
3/2/2010 | Exposure Tracking Model Ranking | A new updated ranking has been completed for source area 71802 SS005. The ETM was updated based on the results of the 2009 Remedial Action Report. The ASTs were demolished and contaminated soil was excavated and treated onsite, then used as daily cover in the permitted construction and debris monofill. Confirmation samples taken from the limits of the excavations did not detect contamination above the applicable cleanup level. All exposure pathways ranked as incomplete or de-minimis exposure. | Kim DeRuyter |
1/19/2011 | Update or Other Action | The CERCLA ROD and Petroleum DD were submitted to the department. Staff provided comments on several versions of the documents. Initially, petroleum contamination at sites with CERCLA contaminants were covered in the ROD. The structure of the CERCLA ROD did not allow for adequate coverage of the petroleum at these sites. Since the petroleum and CERCLA contaminants were not co-located it was decided that the petroleum cleanups at the CERCLA contaminated sites could be covered in the Petroleum Decision Document. Staff provided comments on the draft and draft final versions of these restructured documents. The ROD and Decision Document are currently being prepared for signature. | Kim DeRuyter |
2/10/2011 | CERCLA ROD Approved | ROD and Decision Document signed by the department and the Air Force. The selected remedy for this site is No Further Action. | Kim DeRuyter |
2/10/2011 | Cleanup Complete Determination Issued | Kim DeRuyter |
