Problems/Comments
Area and buildings around Warm Storage Building and Temporary Air Terminal were used for equipment and drum storage; more than 26 drums observed in past; storage of materials and equipment caused spills and leaks; stained soils observed in past. Formerly AOC08 and AOC09. Also see file 610.15.002 and archived file 610.23.001. EPA ID #AK5570028659. Samples were collected for PCB, VOCs, SVOCs, GRO, DRO, RRO, metals, and pesticides during the 1999 RI/FS. Soil borings were advanced to 6 ft bgs and samples were collected from each of the boreholes at 3 and 6 ft bgs. Analytical results from the samples indicated that the POL contamination at SS007 was near surface. DRO and RRO in surface soil were the only contaminants of concern detected above the ADEC migration to groundwater cleanup level. An additional 30 soil borings were advanced during the supplemental RI. DRO and RRO were detected in numerous small scattered areas in surface soil to 3 feet bgs. 630 cubic yards of POL contaminated soil was excavated and landspread at upper camp during the 2009 remedial action. When sample results indicated the concentrations were below health based cleanup levels the excavated soil was used as daily cover in the C&D landfill. Confirmation samples from the limits of the excavations were below the migration to groundwater cleanup level. This site is closed under CERCLA and state regulations. No further remedial action is required and no institutional controls are necessary.
Action Information
Action Date | Action | Description | DEC Staff |
---|---|---|---|
6/15/1999 | Update or Other Action | 1999 RI Activities - Samples: 4 soil borings installed to maximum depth of 6 feet. 7 surface to subsurface soil samples collected. 18 surface and shallow subsurface soil samples collected at 9 visibly stained soil areas for analysis by the CSL. 1 surface water/sediment location sampled. Analyses: Fixed lab: GRO, DRO, RRO, VOCs, SVOCs, pesticides, PCBs, dioxins (BH01 and BH02), metals, TOC, bulk density. CSL: DRO and RRO. Significant RI Findings - Concentrations of RRO in stained soils areas exceeded ADEC cleanup standards. | Former Staff |

12/30/2008 | Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other | 2008 SRI Activities - 30 test pits were sampled adjacent to the previously detected surface stains near the Temporary Air Terminal Building and warm storage building. DRO was detected above the migration to groundwater cleanup level, the maximum detection was 1,470 mg/kg. | Kim DeRuyter |

3/26/2010 | Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other | According to the Draft Remedial Action Report, 630 cubic yards of POL contaminated soil was excavated from numerous small spills at SSOO7. The soil was then landspread at upper camp. When sample results indicated the concentrations were below health based cleanup levels the excavated soil was used as daily cover in the C&D landfill. Confirmation samples from the limits of the excavations were below the migration to groundwater cleanup level. The site was recontoured to fit the natural landscape. The report reccommends site closure. | Kim DeRuyter |

1/19/2011 | Update or Other Action | The CERCLA ROD and Petroleum DD were submitted to the department. Staff provided comments on several versions of the documents. Initially, petroleum contamination at sites with CERCLA contaminants were covered in the ROD. The structure of the CERCLA ROD did not allow for adequate coverage of the petroleum at these sites. Since the petroleum and CERCLA contaminants were not co-located it was decided that the petroleum cleanups at the CERCLA contaminated sites could be covered in the Petroleum Decision Document. Staff provided comments on the draft and draft final versions of these restructured documents. The ROD and Decision Document are currently being prepared for signature. | Kim DeRuyter |
2/10/2011 | CERCLA ROD Approved | ROD and Decision Document signed by the department and the Air Force. The selected remedy for this site is No Further Action. | Kim DeRuyter |
