Problems/Comments

Septic tank, piping, and outfall; received wastes from Equipment Building and Dormitory. No further action recommended in 1999 but decision documents were not finalized. Also see file 610.15.002 and archived file 610.23.001. EPA ID #AK5570028659. Formerly AOC11. DRO was detected to 497 mg/kg in surface soil, above the migration to groundwater pathway, but this pathway is not considered complete at the upper camp area where WP008 is located. Samples were also collected for GRO, RRO, PCBs VOCs, SVOC, metals, pesticides and dioxins. DRO was the only contaminant detected above the risk based screening level or 1/10th of the health based levels. Site identified as Sewage Septic Tank and 349 IF of Sanitary Septic Main in 2009 Cleanup activities. Approximately 0.75 cubic yards of dark, dry sludge was hand shoveled out of the tank, treated with lime, and land spread in the onsite landfill successfully below action criteria. PCBs were determined not to be a contaminant of concern. Sludge was inadvertently incorporated with the soil stockpile from SS006, which later tested below action criteria. This site is closed under CERCLA and state regulations. No further remedial action is required and no institutional controls are necessary.

Action Information

Action Date Action Description DEC Staff
6/15/1999 Update or Other Action !999 RI Activities - Samples: 2 test pits hand dug to a maximum depth of 1.5 feet: one along discharge pipe downslope from septic tank and one at the discharge pipe outfall. Analyses: Fixed lab: GRO, DRO, RRO, VOCs, SVOCs, pesticides, PCBs, dioxins, metals; CSL: DRO and RRO. Significant RI Findings - Concentrations of all detected chemicals in soils were below ADEC cleanup standards. No further remedial action recommended for site soils. Former Staff

3/5/2010 Exposure Tracking Model Ranking A new updated ranking has been completed for source area 71820 WP008. The Ranking is based on the 1999 RIFS which indicates that other than DRO to 497 mg/kg, no other contaminants were detected above the screening levels. The migration to groundwater pathway is not considered complete for this site, so the applicable cleanup level for DRO is 10,250. ADEC agreed to No Further Remedial Action at this site, during the proposed plan and work plan for remedial action in 2008 and 2009. The ETM ranking indicates that all pathways are either incomplete, or de minimis exposure. Kim DeRuyter
1/19/2011 Update or Other Action The CERCLA ROD and Petroleum DD were submitted to the department. Staff provided comments on several versions of the documents. Initially, petroleum contamination at sites with CERCLA contaminants were covered in the ROD. The structure of the CERCLA ROD did not allow for adequate coverage of the petroleum at these sites. Since the petroleum and CERCLA contaminants were not co-located it was decided that the petroleum cleanups at the CERCLA contaminated sites could be covered in the Petroleum Decision Document. Staff provided comments on the draft and draft final versions of these restructured documents. The ROD and Decision Document are currently being prepared for signature. Kim DeRuyter
2/10/2011 Cleanup Complete Determination Issued Kim DeRuyter
2/10/2011 CERCLA ROD Approved ROD and Decision Document signed by the department and the Air Force. The selected remedy for this site is No Further Action. Kim DeRuyter
