Problems/Comments
While completing a site assessment for UXO at the Gerstle River Expansion Area, a drum dump was discovered adjacent to the Administration compound for the Gerstle River Test Site. The drum dump consisted of several mounds of buried drums with several abandoned drums present on the surface. Further assessment work determined that many of the drums had leaked fog-oil (similar to diesel fuel) to the surrounding soil. The Drum Dump was renamed as Drum Disposal Area consisting of the Drum Mound Area and the Stained Soil Area characterized by a faint diesel odor and no vegetation growth. This is a formally used defense site. Cleanup conducted by the US Corps of Engineers.

3/28/2013 | Cleanup Complete Determination Issued | ADEC signed "Declaration of Project Closure Decision for DERP-FUDS Gerstle River Expansion Area, Non-Ordnance Sites". Remedial actions removed waste and soil contamination at the site. Confirmation soil samples identified DRO exceeding most stringent cleanup levels at 14 ft bgs in the center of the former excavation. Subsequent soil borings did not identify significant soil contamination beneath the former excavation. Therefore a thin layer of DRO contaminated soil remains between 14-15 bgs beneath the former excavation. ADEC has determined that the residual DRO contaminated soil does not pose a threat to human health, public safety, or the environment. | Guy Warren |
