Food Banks & Donations
Every day, Alaska businesses throw away thousands of pounds of food. Much of this food could instead feed hungry people, while at the same time reduce waste disposal costs. Diverting food for donation is one of several ways to reduce food waste. Alaska Food Code allows the donation of food from permitted food establishments to food banks and other non-profit organizations; and the donation of wild game meat, seafood (including fish), and plants to non-profits and institutions.
Guidance on this page is to assist food establishments in how to make these donations safely. Consumers of these donations are a very vulnerable part of the population so it is important to ensure that good food safety practices are being followed.
