Becoming a Certified Applicator
Alaska state regulations 18 AAC 90.300 require you to be a Certified Pesticide Applicator for:
- Commercial application If you use, or supervise the use of pesticides on property other than your own, this is “custom, commercial, or contract” application, and requires certification.
- Consultation If you provide information or consultation about commercial pesticide use, you must be certified.
- Schools If you use, or supervise the use of pesticides at a school, you must be certified.
- Public places If you use, or supervise the use of pesticides at a public place, including parks, common areas of apartment buildings, or government offices, you must be certified.
- Restricted-Use Pesticides If you use, purchase, or sell any RUPs, you must be certified.
Requirements for Initial Certification
To become a State of Alaska Certified Pesticide Applicator operator you must:
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Pass all three sections of the Core Exam with a score of 70% or higher in one sitting.
- Pass at least one Category Exam with a score of 70% or higher.
- Submit proof of liability insurance to DEC. (Unless you designate as a Private Applicator)
- Submit $25 fee to DEC.
Certification is valid for one, two, or three years depending on test scores.
You are not certified until DEC has issued you a certified pesticide applicator number and you have received your certified pesticide applicator card.
