Pesticides and Water Quality

The Pesticide Control Program takes several measures to protect water in Alaska from impacts due to pesticides. This includes evaluating various pesticides for potential to impact water resources; requiring protective measures such as limiting or denying certain types of pesticides and requiring a pesticide use permit for all applications of pesticides to water; and maintaining a Water Quality Plan to outline steps that the State will take if pesticides are detected in surface or ground water.

The Program does not currently conduct any water quality monitoring. Routine water quality monitoring for pesticides by other agencies or programs is very limited in Alaska. The Program currently reviews data from the DEC Drinking Water Program. Since tracking began in 2009, there have been no pesticide contamination detected in Alaska waters.
