EH Shellfish Portal Help Topics
There are three reports that are available to shellfish harvesters and the public, they are:
-
Water Temperature Records (Vibrio):
Great care is taken every growing season by the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation and shellfish farm operators to prevent outbreaks of Vibrio. Water temperatures, sampled at varying depths, are sent in weekly from each harvest area to insure safe shellfish harvesting is maintained throughout the growing season.
-
Water Quality (Fecal Coliform):
The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation sets up water quality stations inside each classified area within each harvesting region to maximize growing water safety. Samples are regularly taken from these water quality stations and tested for Fecal Coliform to insure the growing waters are safe for shellfish farming.
-
Tissue Toxicity:
Shellfish farmers in the state of Alaska regularly submit shellfish tissue samples to the state's Environmental Health Laboratory where they are tested against a variety of analytes during the growing season. This combined effort insures safe harvested shellfish meat. Test results are placed into a central database and are used to create this report.
