PPR Spills Database Search

This online query application searches the Statewide Oil and Hazardous Substance Spills Database. The period of record for this database is July 1, 1995 to present. Records for earlier spills exist in the database, but there are no database records for most spills reported to DEC prior to July 1, 1995.

  • For some recent spills, data may not have been entered yet or may not be complete.
  • The data presented is provisional and subject to ongoing quality assurance/quality control. Ongoing reviews may further refine the accuracy of the data.
  • For additional details and the most up-to-date information about a specific spill, please call the response team office for the area in which the spill occurred.

Please take note of the following caveats:
  • The quantity and quality of data can vary considerably from record to record. Data entry is not required for some database fields, while some fields are populated from fixed drop-down lists whose values may imprecisely fit a specific situation or are subject to varying interpretation among users entering data.
  • The database official coverage starts July 1, 1995. You will find records prior to this date, but there is a higher probability they may not be entirely accurate or complete.
  • The Spills database has several many-to-one relationships, for example some incidents are associated with multiple spilled substances, causes, and/or affiliates. Incidents with many-to-one relationships will appear on multiple rows in the exported .csv file. The SpillID and SpillNumber columns contain unique incident identifiers which can be used to identify and remove these multiple rows, if needed.
  • Latitude and longitude coordinates may be highly imprecise.
    • At one time, latitude and longitude coordinates were used to identify a central point within the zip code where the spill occurred. While that has not been the case for at least the past decade, a facility location created under the old system could still be used in a new spill record.
    • The LocationData column defines whether the latitude and longitude coordinates are referencing the general location of the facility (Facility) or the more precise spill site location (Site).
    • Due to the reasons stated above this data is not recommended for use in a GIS.
