The Drinking Water Protection Areas (DWPAs) included in this web service were created to meet the requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act. The web service is publicly available to promote the protection of public drinking water sources. Local governments and State agencies are encouraged to use this data when reviewing permits of activities that may affect a public drinking water source.
The DWPAs can also be used to help determine sampling/monitoring requirements for public water systems. This data is dynamic and is regularly updated. For further information on Source Water Assessment Report is available here: http://dec.alaska.gov/eh/dw/dwp/source_water.html
DWPAs are divided up into Zones A, B, C, E, F and G. The definition of the Zones depends on the source type e.g. ground water, surface water or ground water under direct influence of surface water. Note: the use of Zone D (10 year Time of Travel) has been discontinued.
Zone A: Ground Water sources- equivalent to several months’ Time of Travel, as defined in the Source Water Assessment. Surface Water sources-equivalent to a 1000 foot buffer.
Zone B Drinking Water Protection Area; Ground Water source-equivalent to 2 year Time of Travel, as defined in the Source Water Assessment; Surface Water-equivalent to a 1 mile buffer.
Zone C Drinking Water Protection Area; Surface Water- equivalent to the immediate watershed.
Zone E, F and G Drinking Water Protection Areas are for sources that have been or are suspected or determined to be Groundwater Under the Direct Influence (GUDI) of Surface Water.
Zone E-equivalent to a 1000 foot buffer of the nearest surface water body.
Zone F -equivalent to a 1 mile buffer of the nearest surface water body.
Zone G-equivalent to the watershed contributing to the nearest surface water body.
Provisional Protection Areas represent a 1000 ft buffer around a regulated well/intake that is either new or has not received a Source Water Assessment delineation.
