Label Requirements
Provide a proposed label for each type of product you intend to process. Information for label requirements can be found in 18 AAC 32.070 (e)(4). Each product must be clearly labeled, not contain marks or words that are misleading, and include the following:
- Name of Product: “Raw Milk” or “Raw Milk Product” in letters at least one-quarter inch tall. The common or usual name of the product must be prominently displayed (e.g., “Raw Goat Milk Yogurt”).
- Attention Statement: “ATTENTION: This product has not been pasteurized and, therefore, may contain harmful bacteria that can cause serious illness. Infants, children, the elderly, women who are pregnant, and persons with weakened immune systems are at highest risk, KEEP REFRIGERATED AT 40°F OR BELOW” must be included and the word “ATTENTION” must be in letters at least one-quarter inch tall, and the remainder of the statement must be legible.
- Net Volume of Contents: e.g., “12 FL oz (355ml)”.
- Use By Date: Raw milk and raw milk product labels must have the production date. The label must have the statement “CONSUME WITHIN FOUR DAYS OF PRODUCTION DATE” for raw milk. For raw milk products, the label must have a consume-by-date appropriate to the product as determined by the producer according to industry standards. Day, month, and year should be stated in a style and format that is readily decipherable by consumers. For raw milk products, the label must include the statement, “CONSUME-BY DATE IS DETERMINED BY THE PRODUCER.”
- Producer Information: The label must include the producer’s registration number, the producer’s name, and physical address of the premises where the product was produced.
- Common Name Of Hooved Mammal Producing Milk: This should precede the name of the raw milk or raw milk product. (e.g., “Raw Goat Milk”)
- Ingredients: All ingredients must be listed in descending orders or predominance by weight, including a complete listing of sub-ingredients. e.g., “Butter (cream, salt, annatto).
- Allergen Warning: Due to their serious nature, all allergens, including milk, must be identified. The words “ALLERGEN WARNING: Milk” and any other known allergen ingredient including shellfish, wheat, soy, sesame, fish, peanuts, tree nuts, sesame, and eggs or any other allergens identified in federal requirements.
