Time/Date: The spill occurred at an unknown time, but was discovered at 9:48 am on June 5, 2004. The spill was reported by the City of Galena to the troopers immediately, who reported it to ADEC by 10 am

Cause: The City of Galena utilities manager suspects that the rupture of the underground barge delivery pipeline made from High Density Poly Ethylene (HDPE) was due to the freezing and thawing of the ground resulting in stressing the pipe to the point of rupture.
