F/V Kepala Fire

Location: The vessel caught fire near Black Point at the north end of the Tatitlek Narrows in Prince William Sound. As the fire died down, the remaining portion of the hull drifted to the southeast and ran aground on the beach as the tide went out.
Time/Date: At approximately 12:30 pm on September 11, 2007, the F/V Kepala operator reported to the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) that the vessel had caught fire and the crew was abandoning ship at Black Point near Tatitlek Narrows, Prince William Sound.

Product/ Quantity: The vessel operator reported that the F/V Kepala had approximately 400 gallons of diesel on board and a tank containing 250 gallons of gasoline on the stern. It appears that all of the gasoline and nearly all of the diesel were consumed in the fire. A USCG over flight did not find any sheening around the vessel or in the vicinity.
Cause: The cause of the fire is under investigation by the USCG, but was reported to have started in the stack.
