Repsol Q-6 Hose Rupture Fluid Release

Location: Qugruk #6 pad, on the Colville River Delta, approximately 18 miles northeast of Nuiqsut and approximately 150 miles southeast of Barrow (Lat/Log: 70˚ 27' 20.90" N, -150˚ 44' 07.16" W)
Time/Date: During a well flow back operation, a hose ruptured on a soft line between the well and a storage tank at 2:28 a.m. on April 9, 2013.

Product/ Quantity: The spilled product is a mixture of water based frac fluids (approximately 60 percent), diesel (approximately 35 percent), and crude oil (approximately 5 percent). Based on the amount of product recovered from containment, Repsol estimates that the spill volume is approximately 90 barrels (3,780 gallons).
Cause: Repsol contractor Weatherford International was conducting a flow back test on an exploratory well when the transfer hose used to connect the well to a 400-barrel (17,600-gallon) storage tank failed. The hose failed when it was under pressure causing the oil to spray out onto snow-covered tundra. In response to the hose rupture, the well was shut in. Additional product was released into the bermed and lined secondary containment cell when the fluids in the storage tank drained back through the ruptured hose. The majority of the product was contained within the secondary containment area, and a light to moderate mist over approximately 0.63 acres of snow covered tundra has been reported by Repsol.
