Fairbanks North Star Borough Dry Wood Requirements

Dry Wood Requirements

Wood Sellers - Refer to Wood Seller Requirements - Effective 8/15/2017

Wood Buyers

Beginning October 1, 2021, as defined in 18 AAC 50.076(k), only dry wood (wood with a measured moisture content of 20% or less) may be advertised, marketed or sold within the Fairbanks PM2.5 nonattainment area.

Wood sellers are required to be registered, provide a signed copy of a form that indicates that the wood is dry. Wood buyers should contact Cory McDonald if purchased wood is not dry.

If you are concerned about wood moisture and to verify if purchased wood is dry:

  1. Ensure wood is not frozen
  2. Make a fresh cut across the grain
  3. Use a recommended department approved moisture meter
  4. Measure the wood, if the moisture content is 20% or less, it is dry

Dry Wood requirement exception

Some wet wood may be purchased provided it is in 8 foot or larger rounds and the wood seller provides documentation to the department that the buyer will not burn the wood the season it is cut using either this 8ft-rounds sale form or equivalent documentation of the seller's choice. Therefore, buyers wishing to buy 8 foot or longer rounds must be capable of storing the wood in a manner that will allow it to season in time for the next burning season. Participating in the Burn Right Program, where DEC inspects the buyer’s wood storage ability provides a simple means for buyers to participate in the dry wood exception as it can document for the wood seller that requirements are met.
