Sanitary Survey Basic Course

The Basic Sanitary Survey Course will not be held in 2025. We are planning changes to the way the survey training is structured and delivered.

About the Class

This five (5) day training course, presented by Drinking Water Program staff, will cover inspection techniques, requirements associated with the eight elements of a sanitary survey, and the Electronic Sanitary Survey (ESS) application. The course consists of two parts; online course instruction, using Microsoft Teams, and an in person field exercise (survey) scheduled for the Thursday of the week the course is offered. The exam will be administered on the final day of the course, Friday.

The Basic Sanitary Survey Course will not be held in 2025.

Location

Course instruction will be held in person at DEC Office in Anchorage (555 Cordova Street, first floor conference room). The field exercise will be held in Anchorage.

Course Cost

There is no cost for the course itself, however there is an application fee when requesting approval as a sanitary surveyor.

Required equipment/software

You must have your own laptop and you'll need to have downloaded Microsoft Teams and the desktop Electronic Sanitary Survey (ESS) program prior to class.

Microsoft Teams - If you do not have MS Teams account you'll need to create one and provide the email associated with your Teams account to the DW Program. You will receive an email invitation to join the State of Alaska (SOA) Teams once you accept this invitation you'll need to sign-in to the DEC DW Sanitary Survey Training Team. Download and install the MS Teams application or at least have access to the latest version of Microsoft Edge browser.

Desktop ESS - The requirements and instructions for loading ESS on your laptop are found on the DW Program’s Sanitary Survey webpage under Desktop ESS Download and Installation Guide. DW Program staff will be contacting you prior to the class to ensure this program is uploaded and operational prior to the class.

Who should attend

Drinking water professionals desiring approval as a sanitary survey inspector, who meet the prerequisites listed below.

Prerequisite Information and Class Registration

Prior to being admitted to the class, applicants must provide information on their knowledge and/or experience with drinking water systems, including but not limited to: water sources; water treatment; distribution systems; finished water storage; pumps, pump facilities, and controls; monitoring, reporting, and data verification; water system management and operation; operator compliance with department requirements; and materials and supplies. This information will be gathered through the online registration process.

The Basic Sanitary Survey Course will not be held in 2025.

Note: Upon completing this class and passing the exam, the individual must satisfy the remaining requirements contained in 18 AAC 80.435 (b) and subsequently be approved by the Department in order to be an approved sanitary surveyor for the State of Alaska.
