BPXA Flow Station 2 Crude Oil Overflow

- BP Exploration (Alaska) Inc. (BPXA) discovered an overflow of crude oil from tank 1984 into secondary containment at the Flow Station 2 processing facility at 2:00 p.m. on May 21, 2012. The spill was reported to ADEC at 5:01 p.m. on May 21, 2012.

- BPXA environmental staff and spill response technicians surveyed the site and estimated a spill volume of 4,200 gallons of crude oil based on the surface area and depth of oil within the tank’s secondary containment. This estimate is preliminary due to drifted snow inside the containment area.
- Cause
- The failure of process instrumentation and valves used to control the fluid level in tank 1984 during processing.
