Type of Facility: Wastewater Treatment
Classification Level: Lagoon

Wastewater stabilization pond systems (lagoons) are wastewater systems that score 1 to 30 points under the wastewater treatment system classification rating system (18 AAC 74.120) and where stabilization ponds without aeration are the only means of secondary wastewater treatment. Wastewater stabilization ponds (WWSPs) are also known as wastewater lagoons. Operators of WWSP systems must be certified at the Wastewater Stabilization Pond (lagoon) level to operate a WWSP system. Any higher levels of wastewater treatment certification (provisional, 1, 2, 3, 4) are sufficient levels of operator certification as well. Wastewater collection certification does not meet the certification requirements for WWSP systems.

Prior to the November 21, 2010, changes to the Water and Wastewater Operator Certification and Training regulations (18 AAC 74), wastewater stabilization pond systems were classified as wastewater treatment class 1 systems.
