New - Online Applications!

Signing up for your Certification test just got easier! An online form is now available on the Pesticide Control Program website. Just fill it out on your computer or phone and click submit, and your form goes directly to our inbox.

Re-Certification Deadline

Federal regulation requires that recertification occur prior to expiration of your current pesticide applicator certification. You must complete all continuing education units and submit your application for recertification before your current certification expires. Unfortunately, we can no longer provide a grace period. If you miss the deadline, you simply re-test to regain certification.

Tenant Notification

Don’t forget – tenants must be notified prior to applying pesticides. This can be done verbally or by posting a notice. If you are engaged in structural pesticide application, you are responsible for ensuring residents are properly notified. Information must include the date and time of application, name of pesticide, and instructions about re-entry. Please review the requirements under 18 AAC 90.635 to ensure you understand your responsibilities.

Application Timing

As we all know, conditions in Alaska are not the same as the rest of the country. Growing seasons are later and shorter than most places. Pest lifecycles may be different.

One area we often see problems is with timing of applications. While a pesticide label may indicate effective application months/times, this may not correspond with the correct window of application for Alaska pests. The most effective application period is likely to be significantly reduced from what is listed on the label.

Please make sure you understand the local conditions and pest lifecycles and adjust application timing as necessary for effective pesticide use. The UAF Cooperative Extension 907-786-6300 can provide information and consultation on these topics.

Test Center Hours

With COVID closures and recent staffing issues, many of our test centers have reduced availability. While DEC does not have any influence over how testing centers are scheduled, we work closely with those test centers to try to accommodate your scheduling needs!
