Site Narrative
The City of Delta Junction, in partnership with the Delta Junction Trails Association, requested DBAC services to conduct a cleanup of metals-contaminated soil from a former unauthorized shooting range. The Delta Junction Trails Association intends to construct a trail system on the site and neighboring parcels to be used for walking and cross-country skiing. The site was previously characterized under an EPA Targeted Brownfields Assessment (TBA).
In FY19, DEC developed an Analysis of Brownfields Cleanup Alternatives (ABCA) and selected a remedy of excavation, stabilization, and off-site reuse. In order to dispose of the soil at the Delta Junction landfill, DEC conducted fate-and-transport modeling and coordinated with the DEC Solid Waste Program and City of Delta Junction. DEC excavated metals-contaminated soil from the range floor and impact berm and treated it on-site. The approximately 800 cubic yards of treated soil was transported for disposal at the Delta Junction landfill. In 2021, the Delta Junction Trails Association applied for and was awarded DBAC services to support additional assessment activities as part of the same reuse project.
