The Yukon Trading Post is located near the Steese Highway and River Street intersection in Circle, Alaska. The Yukon Trading Post was used as a gas station from approximately the 1970s-1990s. One 5,000 gallon Underground Storage Tank (UST) and two 2,000 gallon USTs were removed from the site in 1994. The removal report indicates that the dispensing islands and piping were not assessed when the USTs were removed, and that contamination was present in the soil above DEC cleanup levels. Additional site characterization in 1999 indicated that the majority of contamination remained around the dispensing island.
The Danzhit Hanlaii Corporation requested DBAC services to conduct cleanup activities at a former gas station upgradient from the community water well. The land would be reused either to install a Kids Don’t Float informational kiosk with life jackets, aluminum can recycling staging area, or a cultural monument. The contamination at this site had been previously characterized using other DEC funds. DEC developed an Analysis of Brownfield Cleanup Alternatives (ABCA) in Spring 2018.
In FY18-19, DEC excavated 500 cubic yards of contaminated soil and constructed a landfarming cell in which to remediate the soil. Confirmation samples at the base of the excavation showed that petroleum contamination was still present, but unable to be removed due to permafrost. The excavation was backfilled with clean soil. Additional characterization activities were conducted to define the extent of the remaining contamination. No groundwater (supra-permafrost water) was found. Future requirements for this project include maintenance and sampling at the landfarm and a water sample from the community drinking water well. Tilling of the landfarm will be conducted locally in Circle. The Danzhit Hanlaii Corporation has expressed interest in having DEC conduct the sampling of the landfarm and the community well. The site is now available for reuse as a Kids Don’t Float informational kiosk.
