- Division of Forestry burn permit suspensions and burn closures are defined by State statute. They apply on State, borough, municipal, city, and private lands. Burn permit suspensions are typically issued for a Protection Area or portion thereof. State burn closures are issued by the Commissioner of Natural Resources or State Forester and require public notice to establish and rescind. The Alaska Division of Forestry essentially has two types of burn restrictions.
DNR Burn Suspension Information
- Burn permits are temporarily not allowed due to fire danger or hazardous weather conditions as determined by the Department of Natural Resources. During a burn suspension, no open burning, lawn burning or the use of burn barrels is allowed. Warming fires and campfires smaller than 3 feet in diameter are allowed during a burn suspension. However, the Division of Forestry recommends that people refrain from lighting any open fire until changing weather conditions have reduce the fire danger.
DNR Burn Closure Information
- The setting of all fires, burning, entry, or other use of land is prohibited within a designated area or statewide, as determined by the Commissioner of Natural Resources or State Forester and require public notice to establish and rescind. Burn closures may apply to one or more ADF&G Game Management Units.
