Site Narrative

The corporation seeks to redevelop the Ward’s Cove cannery site to revive fish processing or other seasonal and recreational use. An adjacent landfill may have contamination. In 2007, DEC Brownfield services provided a Limited Phase I Environmental Site Assessment was completed for Columbian Ward Fisheries Facility, Dumpsite, and "License to Enter" (LTE) Properties at Chignik Lagoon, Alaska to identify potential environmental concerns. Subject properties included: the Columbia Ward Fisheries (CWF) former cannery on the northwest shore of Chignik Lagoon across from the village of Chignik Lagoon, a dumpsite located in the Dago Creek valley approximately 1,000 feet northwest of the CWF facility, and 18 small lots located near Dago Point approximately 0.5 to 1 mile northeast of the CWF facility. Potential environmental concerns identified included: CWF Facility: fuel tank farms, fuel pipelines, generator shed, heating oil aboveground storage tanks (ASTs), boat storage racks, beach seep, waste disposal, machine shop, and hazardous building materials; Dumpsite: leachate migration and surface debris; LTE Properties: generator shed, heating oil ASTs, and hazardous building materials.
