Alaska Department of Transportation Project
The Alaska Department of Transportation received funding towards the replacement of aging pieces of equipment that did not lend themselves to retrofit technologies. Three (3) heavy duty construction trucks, placed in service by the State of Alaska in 1986 were replaced. These aged trucks were operated in Fairbanks, Alaska, a designated PM2.5 Nonattainment Area.
Fairbanks North Star Borough was designated as the Nonattainment Area for particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5). The Borough passed Ordinance 2010-28 to create a PM2.5 Air Quality Control Program within the Borough and the extending Nonattainment Areas. The intension was to reduce the PM2.5 pollution during the winter months. Vehicular emissions is one of the contributing factor towards the particulate pollution.
Purchasing three new replacement vehicles exceeded the current air quality limits implemented for the borough and it also met EPA's 2010 Clean Diesel requirements.
