Air Toxics
Air toxics, also known as toxic air pollutants or hazardous air pollutants (HAPs), are pollutants that are known or suspected to cause cancer or other serious health effects or adverse environmental effects. The original list consisted of 189 air toxics. However, since 1990 through rulemaking, EPA modified the list to include 188 air toxics.
In 1999, the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) identified Alaska-specific sources and types of air toxics. This information is summarized in our 1999 Alaska Air Toxics Emission Inventory. The inventory helps Alaskans better understand air toxics, health impacts, and ways to reduce exposure.
