Free AWWA Courses

The American Water Works Association (AWWA) offers many free online courses that will allow you to earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs). This page will show you how to create an AWWA account online and access the free courses.

  1. In your web browser go to AWWA's homepage. At the top right of the page, click on the "My Account" link.

  2. On the next page, if you've previously created an AWWA online account, you can login with your username and password and skip to step four of these instructions. If you've forgotten your password there is a link to recover it on the page. If you haven't created an account before click the button that says "I Agree - Create Account".

  3. On the next page you will need to enter your email address, then click continue. On the next page you will enter your name. Then, in the drop-down menu next to "Address Type" change the address type from "Office/US Mail" to "Home". Then enter your mailing address and scroll down to create a password for your AWWA account. It will use your email address as your username. Then check the privacy consent box and click the button to create your account.

  4. Now that you are logged in to your AWWA account, click on your name at the top right corner of the page.

  5. In the left-hand column of the next page, click on the "My Courses" link.

  6. On the right side of the next page, under the "Small Systems Only" heading, enter the code AWWASMSY into the box then click the "Verify" button.

  7. Then, scroll down to see the courses you're enrolled in and click on the one you want to take. There will be multiple pages of courses that you can navigate with the page numbers at the bottom of the course list.

Please note, not all of the AWWA free courses are approved for CEUs. Before taking a course check our list of approved courses for Small Systems (if you have a Small Untreated or Small Treated certification) or our list of approved courses for Large Systems (if you have Water Treatment, Distribution, Wastewater Treatment, or Collection certifications) to make sure it is eligible for CEUs. Make sure to take courses that are on the lists.

Also, some of the free courses are parts of a series, such as EL290-EL296 and EL272-EL276, and you may benefit from taking them in order. For more information about the courses please visit AWWA's Small Systems page.

To complete a course you must complete all of the activities and pass the quiz at the end with a score of 70% or higher. Most of the quizzes have ten questions. If you leave a course without finishing it, you will be able to start up where you left off when you return. Once you've completed a course, it will ask you if you want to redeem your CEU credit. Redeem the credit and email a copy of your certificate of completion to dec.opcert@alaska.gov.

If you have any issues accessing your account or the courses you should contact AWWA directly.
