Notice Concerning Exams
Online ABC Exams
The following online testing centers have reopened but in a limited capacity:
- Anchorage: UAA Testing Center
- Bethel: Yuut Elitnaurviat People's Learning Center
- Fairbanks: UAF Testing Center
- Juneau: UAS Testing Center
- Kenai: Kenai Peninsula College Testing Center
- Ketchikan: UAS, Ketchikan Testing Center
- Klawock: Prince of Wales Vocational & Technical Education Center
- Kodiak: Kodiak College Testing Center
- Palmer: Mat-Su College Testing Center
- Valdez: Prince William Sound College Testing Center
- Utqiagvik: Ilisagvik College
The reopening of the testing centers is subject to change depending on the course of the COVID-19 pandemic.
There will be social distancing and other safety requirements in place at the testing centers. Be sure to contact the testing center ahead of time and learn about their examinee requirements before going in to take your test.
All other online testing centers are still closed.
Paper Based ABC Exams
Paper based exams may be available to be administered in some rural communities. Please contact the Operator Certification Program for availability.
Available Exams:
The State of Alaska started using the 2019 standardized exams from the Association of Boards of Certification (ABC) in June 2020.
The following exams are available online:
- Water Treatment Provisional/1, 2, 3, and 4
- Water Distribution Provisional/1, 2, 3, and 4
- Wastewater Treatment Provisional/1, 2, 3, and 4
- Wastewater Collection Provisional/1, 2, 3, and 4
The exam resources for the 2017 standardized ABC exams are applicable to the 2019 exams. For information about the 2017 standardized ABC exams.
For Small Untreated or Small Treated online exams.
Passing an exam does not result in certification. After passing an exam you must submit an application along with the $100 review fee to request certification. For more information concerning certification.
The Steps to Follow:
- Register with ADEC for an online exam by one of the following methods.
- Mail in the exam registration form with the $150 per exam fee or
- Apply through your online operator record
- Wait to receive email notification from ADEC that you are approved for the exam.
- Contact one of the 14 Testing Centers to schedule a time to take the exam. Online exams must be taken within 100 days of the authorization date.
Registration Deadlines and Scheduling:
Online Registration: Register online by the first (1st) of each month.
Mail-in Registration: The paper registration form must be in the ADEC Juneau office by close of business on the 1st of the month. If the 1st falls on a weekend or holiday, the registration deadline is the first preceding business day. All exam fees must be paid at the time of registration.
Exam Scheduling: Examinee is notified and exam scheduled by the 22nd of the month and must take the exam within 100 days.
If you do not take the online exam within the 100 days, you forfeit the application and exam fees, and must re-register and pay all fees to take the exam.
Fees:
Online Exam Fee: $150 per exam. The exam fee must be paid before ADEC will schedule you for an online exam.
Testing Center Fee:
Each testing center charges a fee to administer an exam. The testing center fee is paid to the testing center at the time of the exam.

Contact Information and Locations of the Testing Centers:
You must receive notification from ADEC that you are approved to take an online exam before contacting a Testing Center.
Testing Center staff will not allow you to take an exam unless first notified by ADEC.
It is the examinee's responsibility to contact the testing center to schedule a testing time.
