Maintaining and Improving your Operator Certification Best Practices Score
This page contains information about how to maintain and improve your community's operator certification Best Practices score. Click on the tabs below to see more information about each topic.
In addition to in-person trainings, we highly recommend that operators use study materials to help them prepare for exams.
For Small Treated and Untreated exams we have free study materials available.
For Water Treatment level 1-4 exams we have a study guide with a list of recommended materials.
Operators must submit a registration form along with a fee of $150 per exam. We will arrange for a proctor to administer the exam in your community.
After passing the exam, operators of Water Treatment Level 1-4 systems must submit an application for certification documenting their eligibility for certification. Operators of Small Treated and Untreated Systems do not need to submit an additional application.
Operators may also apply for certification online through their online operator profile.
Operators must earn continuing education units (CEUs) and pay a renewal fee every three years to renew their certificates.
CEUs for Small Untreated/Treated systems can be earned from our list of small system online/correspondence courses. CEUs for Water Treatment Level 1-4 systems can be earned from our list of large system online/correspondence courses. Other in-person trainings, conferences, and events may be eligible for CEUs as well. Some of these can be found on our training calendar.
If an operator has met their CEU requirement, they may renew their certifications up to a year before they expire. They can renew online by finding their record in the operator database and clicking on the "renew certificates" button.
